Tryptophan
As a building block for serotonin and melatonin, tryptophan plays an important role in mood balance, stress management, and sleep quality.
What is tryptophan?
L-tryptophan, often simply called tryptophan, is an essential amino acid that the body cannot produce on its own and must be obtained from food or supplements. It serves as a precursor to serotonin, a neurotransmitter.
Serotonin is found throughout the body, particularly in the digestive tract and brain, where it plays a role in managing:
- Nerve signalling – communication between nerve cells
- Mood – emotional balance and well-being
- Hunger – appetite, satiety, and cravings
- Sleep – sleep patterns and wakefulness
Tryptophan is also converted into melatonin, the hormone that helps regulate the sleep–wake cycles (circadian rhythm).
Tryptophan supplement benefits
Because of its role in both serotonin and melatonin production, tryptophan is commonly used to support restful sleep, a balanced mood, relaxation, and a healthy stress response.
